Intensive piano courses for advanced students and young professional pianists. Piano teachers also welcome. The masterclasses are designed for performers and teachers, both active participants and observers. Piano duos, as well as duos with piano (violin, viola, cello and wind instruments), trios and quartets with piano are also welcome.

The Steps:

An Edwardian house with literary and musical connections, just 15 minutes walk from the ancient and historic Cinque Ports town of Rye -


At The Steps and at a nearby hotel.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is included in the cost of the Course.

Pianos: Excellent practicing facilities.

There is a comprehensive Library offering a wide range of music Urtext editions, analytical books, CDs and also general reading in a variety of different languages.

Recreation: Should you wish to take a break, we have in the gardens a traditional croquet lawn, badminton and table tennis. There is also nearby a private Club offering The Steps the use of an indoor heated swimming pool and Gym at a cost of £6.00 per session.

Students Concert: 28th July pm at Winchelsea Church

For the grand finale of the week, there will be a concert at the historic Winchelsea Church, which also hosts a celebrated arts festival: and will be followed by a celebratory reception.

On the final Sunday morning, traditional English Brunch will be served prior to your departure.


The nearest main station is Ashford International, which connects to both Europe via the Eurostar and London stations – from Ashford there is a direct link to Rye itself.

Pianist and pedagogue Alberto Portugheis was born in La Plata,Argentina, to parents of Russian and Rumanian descent. His international career began after winning First Prize at theGeneva Concours de Virtuosité.
He performs in recitals, chamber-music concerts and as soloist with major orchestras, including: Royal Philharmonic, LondonSymphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Philharmonia, English Chamber Orchestra, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Parisand Israel Sinfoniettas, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Sinfonica Nacional of Argentina, Filarmonica of Buenos Aires. His annual Steinway Masterclasses are now legendary.
Alberto Portugheis’ repertoire includes music from the baroque to contemporary, with several composers writing specially for him. His acclaimed recordings include: 4 Chopin Ballades, Alfred Nieman 2nd Sonata, Ginastera complete piano music and chamber music with piano, Khachaturian Piano Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra, Khachaturian solo works, Rachmaninov and Shostakovitch cello and piano Sonatas with the cellist Gwyneth George, a CD dedicated to the piano music of Rossini. 2013 saw the release of a double CD with The Complete Piano Works by Spanish composer Elena Romero, followed this year by a CD of music by Bach and Dinu Lipatti, partnered by Italian pianist Stefano Greco and the Youth Orchestra of León, Spain, conducted by Georgina Sánchez.
Alberto Portugheis is founder member and former Vice-chairman of the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe, Vice-chairman of the International Society for the Study of Tension in Performance, Vice-president of the European Piano Teachers' Association and founder of the Asociacion Latino-Americana de Pianistas Pedagogos.

Like his colleague and compatriot Daniel Barenboim, Alberto Portugheis dedicates much time and energy to campaign for lasting World Peace
though the organization he presides, HUFUD (Humanity United for
Universal Demilitarisation - Honorary President: Martha Argerich).
Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008 for his Peace work and proposals, Portugheis published The Game of War and a Path to Peace the following year. His second book “$$$$$$s In Their Hearts” was released in 2014.

Nacido en La Plata, Argentina, de familia rusa y rumana, se formó en Buenos Aires con Vicente Scaramuzza, y perfeccionó en Ginebra (donde estudió además violín y dirección orquestal) y en Londres.

Luego de obtener el primer premio en el “Concours de Virtuosité” de Ginebra, Portugheis comienza su carrera internacional, visitando más de cuarenta países, realizando recitales, conciertos de música de cámara como así también participando como solista con muchas de las más prestigiosas orquestas del mundo incluyendo: Royal Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Philharmonia, English Chamber Orchestra, Paris and Israel Sinfoniettas, Orchestre Suisse Romande, Sinfónica Nacional de Buenos Aires, Filarmónica de Buenos Aires.

Se ha presentado frecuentemente en programas radiales y de televisión en Europa y dicta regularmente cursos y Masterclasses en numerosas ciudades de Europa y Estados Unidos. Sus enseñanzas han llegado a ciudades como Rodas, Atenas, Nicosia, Dubrovnik, Moscú y Nueva York en la Juilliard School. Alberto Portugheis tiene un extenso repertorio que incluye música desde el barroco (que incluye transcripciones propias) hasta nuestros días. Muchos compositores de la actualidad le han escrito obras.

Entre sus grabaciones más aplaudidas figuran las cuatro baladas de Chopin, la segunda sonata de Alfred Nieman, la integral de Alberto Ginastera para piano y música de cámara con piano, obras para piano de Khachaturian y su concierto, junto a las sonatas para cello y piano de Rachmaninoff y Shostakovitch y un CD dedicado a obras para piano de Rossini. Su última grabación está dedicada a la Obra Integral par Piano de la compositora española Elena Romero (dos CDs).

Alberto Portugheis, al igual que su compatriota y colega Daniel Barenboim, dedica parte de su tiempo y energías a luchar para la Paz y los Derechos Humanos. En el año 2008 fué propuesto para el Premio Nobel de la Paz. Ha publicado dos libros (en inglés): "El juego de la Guerra y un camino hacia la Paz" y "$$$$$$s en sus corazones".
